Hi, The cause of seb derm is unknown but some researchers think it to be an autoimmune disease because it primarily involves an abnormal response by the immune system towards Malassezia byproducts. Seb derm also tends to occur in people who have a weaknened immune system and may be improved by treatment targeted at the immune system. All this leads many to believe that seb derm is an auto-immune disease. There is a lack of scientific evidence confirming or denying if seborrheic dermatitis is an autoimmune disease and more research needs to be conducted in this area. However, one thing is certain, an unhealthy immune system plays a big role in aggravating seb derm. In conclusion, seborrheic dermatitis is not an autoimmune disorder. However, it is caused by an overactive immune system. That’s why you can’t just treat Seb derm superficially with antifungal creams and steroid creams, you need to treat Seb derm from the inside as well by making significant lifestyle changes. Q: I eat avocado toast every day and now I have Seb Derm. Should I stop eating avocado? Avocado oil is a definite no-go for Seb Derm. However, eating avocados are good for skin health and doesn’t worsen or trigger seb Derm. Even ingesting avocado oil is not a problem. It’s only an issue if you apply avocado oil to your scalp or skin directly. * Every week I answer one reader question. If you have any questions for me, just hit reply and ask away.
